Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I check my own IP address?

A: Fastest way is to enter terminal window (command prompt in Windows). You can check yor network interfaces with a single command. The command and print out wary depending on your operating system.

  • Windows: ipconfig /all
  • MAC: ifconfig
  • Linux: ifconfig

In Windows IP address is visible at IPv4 Address. Some times you may require your network adapters physical address A.K.A. MAC (Media Access Control) address, which is visible at Physical Address:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : yok.fi
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-23-54-04-05-06
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 86.50.X.X

In MAC and Linux the command is the same, but print out may be different. IP address should be visible at inet addr. network adapter's MAC address is visible at HWaddr:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:8d:04:05:06
          inet addr:86.50.X.X Bcast: Mask:

Notice! If you are using a router, then your computer most likely gets a private network address (192.168.X.X). Your Student Village Network IP (86.50.X.X) is given to your router, which then uses NAT transformation and gives out private network IP to your computer.

Q: My wireless connection is failing constantly, what is wrong?

A: If your wireless connection fails alot, the most likely reason is, that there is another wireless router in your neighbourhood, which is using the same radio channel as your router. You could try and change your router's channel. Router's user's manual should have instructions on how to change radio channels. You should also try reseting your router and cleaning the biggest dust puppies from it.

Q: Game/program X does not work, Can you open port Y from your firewall?

A: No.

Q: MSN messenger voice calls don't work. Is there any way to make viop calls from Student Village Network?

A: MSN Messenger voice calls have had some difficulties due to firewall restrictions. Voice call functions may improve by installing a newer version of messenger. Some users have also reported success with other voip software such as Netmeeting, Yahoo messenger and Skype.

Student Village Networks firewall policy blocks almost all incoming connections. Outward connections are not limited, so you may have better luck making a voip call, if you make the call, rather than receiving it.

Q: I can't reach the library's online material (such as NetMOT) from Student Village Network?

A: You can reach the online material through Nelli portal.

Q: Can I share my network connection by using a community wireless access point (such as FON, Wippies...)?

A: No, you can't share your connection. The contract prohibits users from sharing their connection to third party. Wireless access to your network connection must be limited to your house hold, which means the persons living in your appartment. Exeption to the rule is OpenSpark. OpenSpark wireless sharing is permitted: More info about OpenSpark.
