Connecting a computer to the network

Connection

An ethernet cable is needed for connecting a computer to Student Village Network. The cable should be a straight-connected ethernet cable (Cat5), with RJ-45 connectors. To determine if you have a straight-connected cable, you can examine the cable's connectors and see if the wire colors are in same order. If the colors differ, then you've got a cross-over cable and it might not work in you apartment.

Notice! TYS appartments don't come with the needed ethernet cable by default. Sometimes old tenants leave a cable behind, but not always. If you don't have the required cable, you can purchase one at any computer store or from IT Management's reception desk.

Your computer should have a built-in network adapter or a separate ethernet card. Network adapter has a RJ45 socket, usually it is named LAN or has the ethernet logo seen on the picture below. Student Village Network is compatible with all ethernet adapters, which support 100BASE-T full duplex. Most modern ethernet adapters are compatible with 100BASE-T.

Picture on the left shows one type of network socket found in TYS apartments. Your apartments network socket might differ from this type. Some apartments have multiple sockets and smaller apartments might only have one. Sockets should have an ID label, if your socket does not have a label or the socket is loose, then you need to inform TYS about it. All network sockets are not connected to Student Village Network.

You can find your apartment's active network socket here.

For the connection to work, you need to set your network settings to automatic. OS specific instructions can be found on the navigation menu. If you can't get the network connection working, please proceed to troubleshooting section on the navigation menu.

Ikituuri apartments connection panel

Ikituuri connection panel

Ikituuri's apartments differ from other TYS's apartments. In Ikituuri all apartments have an ethernet connection panel located at the fuse box near the entrance. The incoming ethernet connection is labeled as TJ/x.x. Bedroom sockets are MH and livingroom is OH. To connect the internet connection to OH or MH sockets, tenant will have to connect a patch cable between TJ/x.x and the desired room socket. A straight ethernet cable will do. 0,5m length cable is sufficient.

If more than one connection is needed in the apartment, then you will need an ethernet router or a switch. The fuse box has a small area with an electrical socket. You can place a small network device there if you desire to connect all rooms to Student Village Network. Notice however, that placing a wireless router in the metal casing will most likely dampen the wireless radio signal and cause network disruptions in your wireless network.
